Australian innovation showcased at The Japan Prize

Australian innovation showcased at The Japan Prize

An Australian scientist has been honoured by one of the world’s most prestigious award committees: Dr Jacques Miller and his partner Dr Max D. Cooper were awarded the Japan Prize, which recognises the contribution of individuals in the fields of science and technology.

The pair were recognised for their ground-breaking research related to understanding the body’s immune system. The work of Dr Miller and Dr Cooper created a ripple effect in the science community and established the foundation for modern immunology. Their work made a significant contribution to the understanding of disease and therapeutic research development: 80% of the top pharmaceutical drugs used today originated from immunology research.

Dr Miller was delighted to return to Japan this year for the Japan Prize ceremony: “I’m very pleased to have met so many Japanese scientists. I think Japan is a world leader.” The doctor also spoke about his belief in the benefits of collaboration within the scientific community: “I think exchanging ideas and even criticism is so important.” Indeed, collaboration between countries like Japan and Australia is increasing, and joint research and partnership opportunities in the area of life science in particular are expected to grow.

Dr Miller and Dr Cooper spoke about challenges such as attracting funding for research, and also about the importance of encouraging fresh, young talent to engage in curiosity-driven research.

“The future belongs to young people, so we should do anything we can to encourage them into research,” said Dr Miller. “It is only through science that we can reverse the ills of society [such as] climate change.”

The achievements of Dr Miller are reflective of the Australian scientific community’s ability to produce world-class research and developments that improve the lives of people around the world, and to inspire the next generation of innovators.

Let’s celebrate Australian innovation@Australianow!
