It builds on the deep and long-standing connections between Australia and Japan by presenting the best of Australian innovation, lifestyle and creativity, showcasing contemporary Australia to our friends in Japan. Bangarra Dance Theatre is Australia’s leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance company, acclaimed worldwide for its moving performances, distinctive voice and authentic storytelling. In the company’s fourth visit to Japan, they present I.B.I.S. and Spirit 2018, showcasing the best of Bangarra’s 30-year repertoire of contemporary movement. Forged from over 65,000 years of culture, Bangarra is an unforgettable dance experience.

Australia now Opening Ceremony

The opening event of Australia now, Australia Day in Spring was a great success, held at the Australian Embassy, Tokyo. Following Ambassador Richard Court AC’s opening address, the Australia now Goodwill Ambassador, Ms Sarah Àlainn and Yorta Yorta soprano Ms Deborah Cheetham AO performed Womin Jeka Elements 2 to welcome guests.

Australian Short Film Theatre in Roppongi -Powered by Flickerfest

Representing Australia’s well-established film culture, award-winning Australian short film highlights from the Flickerfest International Short Film Festival were shared with audiences in the Roppongi Hills Arena, Tokyo. The festival featured booths promoting Australian food and drinks, allowing guests to enjoy an outdoor Australian-style picnic right in the centre of Tokyo.

UNIVERSAL PRINCIPLES / UNIQUE PROJECTS: Architecture Re-Setting the Agenda (Exhibition)

Combining Australia’s cutting-edge innovation, environment-friendly lifestyle, and flourishing creativity, Australia now presented a specially curated architectural exhibition titled UNIVERSAL PRINCIPLES / UNIQUE PROJECTS: Architecture Re-Setting the Agenda. The exhibition allowed the many visitors to experience Australia’s passionate pursuit of quality architecture and design that is environmentally responsible, resource friendly and sympathetic to context.

Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, Niigata

The concept for Australia House was born in 2009 as part of the fourth Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, and is located in the mountainous Echigo-Tsumari region.  It has been a base for cultural exchange since then. Australia House hosts Artists-in-Residence programs and cultural exchanges with the support of the local Urada community. Along with attending the 2018 Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, Ambassador Richard Court AC also visited Australia House to express his gratitude to local volunteers, as well as meeting with artists participating in the festival as part of Australia now.
